Clariant launches new PTFE-free Ceridust® 8170 M powder coating texturing agent

Growing concerns about the impact of PFAS on human health and the environment have led to growing demand for alternatives to PTFE. In response to this trend, Clariant launches Ceridust 8170
M, a PFAS/PTFE-free texturing agent for architectural powder coatings.

When used in window frames, fence surfaces, furniture and bicycle rims, the new additive provides excellent performance in both dark and light colors, without extrudate swelling and the ability to adjust gloss and texture levels .

Ceridust 8170 M complies with EU REACH regulations. It can also help reduce energy consumption during the extrusion process.

Regulations around the world increasingly target PFAS-related compounds. The EU has enacted legislation to further restrict or ban PFAS products from 2026 at the earliest, and is currently undergoing public consultation. Japan’s Environmental Agency has approved a ban on the production, import and use of 56 PFOA-related compounds under the country’s Chemical Substances and Control Act, while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency wants to designate PFOA and PFOS as “hazardous substances” under the federal Superfund law.

Simon, Clariant Technical Business Development Manager
Bodendorfer said: “As a leader in sustainability, Clariant is taking a proactive, safety-focused and environmentally friendly approach to help customers navigate this uncertain and rapidly changing situation. For Ceridust
8170 M, the challenge was to create a product capable of producing textural effects in powder coatings that was PTFE-free and offered the same performance as its PTFE-containing predecessor. ”

“With PTFE-free additives quickly becoming a major commercial requirement, we are proud to have developed this leading alternative to architectural powder coatings.”

In this regard, Clariant’s “Coatings Innovation Center” has just opened and is preparing to launch collaborative projects with customers. This groundbreaking, state-of-the-art research and development facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, is supporting the development of high-performance and sustainable additives for the North American paint and coatings industry.

Ceridust 8170
M is the latest addition to the growing Ceridust additive portfolio, which offers solutions focused on today’s challenges of minimizing environmental impact and improving product performance. Clariant’s PTFE-free solutions also include polyethylene waxes and bio-based wax blends, both of which have shown success in replacing PE/PTFE additives.
